Surgical Dermatology

Expert Skin Surgery by Specialist Dermatologists

At the Dermatology and Vein Institute Australia (DVIA), we provide safe, effective, and minimally invasive skin surgery for a wide range of skin concerns. Our dermatologists are highly trained in procedural dermatology and perform skin surgeries with precision, care, and a focus on both medical and cosmetic outcomes.

What is Surgical Dermatology?

Surgical dermatology involves minor procedures performed under local anaesthetic to diagnose or treat skin conditions — most commonly skin cancers, suspicious moles, cysts, or growths. These procedures are performed in our purpose-built treatment rooms with the highest standards of safety and sterility.

Conditions Treated with Skin Surgery

We regularly perform procedures to treat:

  • Skin cancers (including basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and early melanomas)
  • Atypical or changing moles
  • Cysts, small lipomas, and benign skin growths
  • Warts and seborrheic keratoses
  • Sun damage or pre-cancerous lesions (actinic keratoses)
  • Nail biopsies and other diagnostic procedures

Types of Procedures We Perform

Excisional Surgery

  • Complete surgical removal of a lesion with closure using sutures. This is often used for skin cancers or moles.
  • Shave Excision
  • Removal of raised lesions (like benign moles or warts) at the surface level, with no stitches required.
  • Curettage and Cautery
  • Scraping of superficial lesions (e.g. superficial BCCs) followed by cauterisation to control bleeding and destroy remaining abnormal cells.
  • Biopsies
  • Small tissue samples are taken for laboratory analysis to confirm a diagnosis before treatment.
  • Cryotherapy – Freezing of benign lesions using liquid nitrogen to remove them without cutting the skin.

Excisional Surgery – What to Expect

  • Quick and comfortable: Most procedures take 15–20 minutes and are performed under local anaesthetic.
  • Minimal downtime: Most patients return to normal activities the same day or the following day.
  • Clear aftercare instructions: We provide detailed advice and follow-up to support healing and minimise scarring.

For larger or complex skin cancers, we may refer you to a specialist surgical team or collaborate with plastic surgeons where needed.
