Skin Checks at DVIA

Early Detection Saves Lives

Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer globally, and early detection is key. Most skin cancers can be treated effectively when caught early — making regular skin checks an essential part of your health routine.

At Dermatology and Vein Institute Australia (DVIA), our dermatologists are skin cancer experts, trained to detect both melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers at every stage. We also assess a wide range of skin lesions and conditions that may require monitoring or treatment.

Why Skin Checks Matter

Non-melanoma skin cancers are the most commonly diagnosed cancers in Australia, and the risk of developing skin cancer increases with age — particularly for those over 60. Regular professional skin checks, in addition to self-examinations, greatly improve the chances of early diagnosis and successful treatment.

Our dermatologists also provide education on how to check your skin at home and can help you track changes with clinical photographs for future comparison.

Who Should Get a Skin Check?

While annual skin checks are beneficial for everyone, they are strongly recommended for individuals at higher risk. You may be at increased risk if you:

  • Have a personal or family history of melanoma or skin cancer
  • Have fair or very fair skin, particularly Skin Type I or II
  • Have red or blonde hair and blue or green eyes
  • Have a history of blistering sunburns or high sun exposure
  • Are aged 40 or older, particularly if over 60
Have more than 50–100 moles on your body
  • Have previously been diagnosed with a melanoma or other skin cancers
  • Have more than 20 solar keratoses (sunspots)

Even if you don’t fall into one of these categories, routine checks are still a valuable preventive tool.

Recommendation:

  • Low-risk patients: Annual skin checks
  • High-risk patients: Every 3 to 6 months, plus self-checks every 3 months

What Happens During a Skin Check?

A skin check at DVIA is a thorough, head-to-toe assessment, including areas you may not be able to examine yourself (e.g., scalp, back, behind ears). Here’s what you can expect:

  • Review of your personal and family history of skin cancer
  • Discussion of any new or changing moles or spots of concern
  • Inspection of all moles, freckles, and lesions
  • Use of dermatoscopy (a specialised skin microscope) for detailed assessment
  • Photographs may be taken to monitor lesions over time
  • Immediate advice on whether a biopsy is needed
  • Same-day or scheduled surgical removal for concerning lesions
  • Monitoring or follow-up plans where appropriate
